Animal Communication

I was recently watching Cesar Millan (Dog Whisperer) working with an “animal communicator”  who could read her dog, but could not  “talk” to him, at least not in ways the dog understood.  I was struck by behaviors I have seen quite often—we humans want everyone and everything  to understand and accept what we say, from our perspective. In psychology we call this being egocentric, and it is a developmental stage common in a 2 year old (You have to laugh , no ?).

Animal communicators can understand what animals say however do not assume s/he has the skill  to then talk to the animals in ways that have meaning for THEM.  For example, one can do a Reading for someone who only speaks Farsi, but then may not be able to communicate in a meaningful fashion to that person—as:  1) We don’t speak Farsi  and,  2) Without understanding the culture, we are not able to address the priorities that dominate that culture’s paradigm.  Therefore our message becomes irrelevant and meaningless to the person.

So while understanding a horse, cat, dog, snake, we also then need to know what is important to the individual animal and we need to know what is important to the species. It is a different skill to be able use the animal's chosen language of communication, not ours.  In addition, when doing animal readings, the humans involved have to be read as well. Each person (fur, feather, scale, along with the hairless apes) adds in an energy to all the interactions.  Like family therapy, pet ownership is a system of relationships….. it is never just the problem of the pet (unless it is a medical condition).

When finding an animal psychic, I want to make sure that person knows how to translate information into the perspective of the animal. I do not want to just appease the owner.  It is hard to tell an owner that the problem they are experiencing is that s/he is expecting the animal to be what they want the animal to be or that the owner unrealistically wants the animal to want everything the owner wants.

Imagine telling a horse owner the horse does NOT LIKE horse shows when the owner got the horse just for that reason!  Many animal owners do not realize getting an animal family member is like getting married—tons of compromise to get along, and lots of energy needed to find out what makes the other happy --  not just one’s self.

Animal Readings can fix problems, but , the whole picture needs to be addressed.  If we fix an animal’s behavior problem, however the animal is not (for example)  getting enough exercise, it is cruel (in my mind) to ask the animal to adapt to being a slave and live under conditions that are only good for the human.

If you get a Reading for your animal, make sure you are ready to correct yourself, and that you will be willing to make changes (even if inconvenient to you) that will help your animal receive what s/he needs to have a good life as a species!
