Silent vs Sound/Guided Meditation

Many people love to go to workshops or classes that use sound (crystal and metal bowls, music, drumming) or vocal guidance. These absolutely have value and certainly help us to feel good or at the very least get out of a bad mood or stuck place.  Yet, there is a power in Silence that is completely different then structured, guided, or musical spiritual work.

Surprisingly, there’s little research into the effects of silence on our brains and health. In fact, most of the findings on the power of silence were made by mistake.  In one rare study, Duke University regenerative biologist Imke Kirste found a relationship between neurogenesis and silence. “While studying adult mice, she found that two hours of silence per day prompted cell development in the hippo-campus, the brain region related to the formation of memory, involving the senses.”

Spiritually music and any kind of guidance speaks to the left brain as well as the right. Music and/or words infer associations for our mind to grab onto and spin into an experience. Silence teaches us to be in our own relationship both with Spirit as well as compelling us to enter into a mature and responsible relationship with our own mind that we often find so troublesome and disruptive. We do not hate the mind;  the mind allows us to pay bills, drive a car, etc. However most of us do not have a good partnership or mature relationship with our mind.

Silent meditation gives us the discipline to access Spirit any where, any time, in any situation. We cannot always turn on music or chant when in the middle of a business meeting or an argument. However we can always tune into the Silence and in that Silence, even if it is a matter of seconds, we open our selves up to Guidance from Spirit. Spirit, like Silence, is everywhere, and that is what we want.... Spirit everywhere, in every decisions, every conversation... as much as possible. Accessing Spirit can only become a skill and a habit through practice and repetition through silent meditation.

So in addition to any guided or sound meditation, consider the Silence. Make that your secret friend, your personal Guide as well as retreat center that you can carry with you into conversations, conflicts, and relationships.
