Forget Self-Love

Forget Self-Love Seriously. If you are wounded, unhealed, if you grew up in a dysfunctional family, if you grew up in poverty, war, racism, sexual threats or assault (this covers just about everyone, no?) where on Earth have you learned the skills on how to give yourself   healthy self-love? Bombarded by consumerism commercials and the new age messed up messages of “you deserve it” you will be shooting in the dark trying to do something that you have never seen modeled for you and never experienced.   Self-love has become a co-opted slogan to sell you “stuff” or “experiences” including all the current workshops that “sell” hope and liberation, guaranteed after attending one weekend. Lord.   Let’s dial it back. Start instead with self-care. This will be difficult enough. For those of you who had children, think back on how complex it was figuring out how to care for your first child. You can do the same thing remembering your first pet (as an adult). No matter ...

Creating Narratives

Image
Creating Narratives The new age industry has mastered the art (and profit) of creating narratives. For example even in this age stories persist that extraterrestrials built the pyramids all over the world by levitating stones even though laser science has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that it was the use of wood, levies, and excellent engineering combined with plain old earthly ingenuity and the brutal use of thousands of slaves that built the pyramids. Narratives sell (look at commercials!), but do not necessarily heal. In fact sometimes these narratives create huge problems for the people that pay to hear them.   Popular “spiritual” narratives are someone telling you about one of your   past lives (when it is your unhealed wounds attracting you to the wrong people), or to explain your illness (or weight issue etc.) with chakra misalignment (rather than due to your poor choices or addiction issues), or to justify the misbehavior of your children with stories of th...

The Secret of "The Secret"

The Secret of “The Secret” “The Secret” spread like a virus across the developed nations.   Yes there is a law of attraction, but it has nothing to do with your conscious mind. If it did, all the new age gurus would be rich without working, thin without dieting, have muscles without working out and in love with a perfect mate without having to use any relationship skills. Study your new age gurus; see what you can learn about their biography if they haven’t already altered it to make them look good. I promise that what you will find will not be the life they are selling, because it simply does not exist. The conscious mind (your wishful thinking, your conscious desires and appetites etc.) does not run your life, even mainstream psychology knows this. Famous Austrian psychoanalyst and neurologist, Sigmund Freud popularized the concept of the unconscious mind and believed that it was a repository of thoughts, memories, feelings, etc., which our conscious mind is relucta...

Addicted to "getting it"

Addicted to “Getting” It Following Guidance, so many “new age” people do this after a lovely conversation, that they “understand” with (so-called) guides that talked to them (in words or “signs” that are easily and immediately understood) so that there is no anxiety of having to follow the next steps (because you “understand” them),   usually to get what you want. This is not Faith. These are not the stories in the bible, the Koran, the Talmud, the I-Ching, etc.   Westerners are addicted to understanding, to “getting” it.   “Getting” it, gaining understanding, is a key component of modern psychology and it definitely has benefits. One way to change is to gain understanding either through a Teacher, a therapist, a nutritionist, a personal trainer, reading research, etc.   You can use that understanding to then implement change, which in some cases will change your energy because you implemented change you understood. However, many people gain understanding ...
