Dignity and Respect

Readings, Energy Work, and other Healing Arts typically attract people who are confused, and/or in pain. When one is in a bad place, behaviors can be affected.  People who lack self esteem or self respect usually treat others as poorly as they treat themselves.  Being a Light Worker (like being a therapist) challenges one to care for one's self, while also caring for others.

People show up late, or not at all. Some expect to be "fixed" and are furious when they discover the work has to be done by the person. Others come for validation only and do not want to be told new information or asked to discover anything about themselves that does not fit their current view of themselves. Some people respect the Light Worker profession and others take the years of training and discipline for granted. The flag of entitlement is flying high in the millennium. Some come to Light Workers because they believe or feel they are "gifted" and want the secret key to their success (there is no key, only a Path). And then the truly Walking Wounded come limping in and they simply don't know how to behave as they are barely surviving at the moment.  While we have compassion for their situation, like a wounded or cornered animal, there can be serious repercussions as well.

There is a balance between tolerance and boundaries; consideration for others and consideration for the self. There is never a right answer and every situation is specific and different. Sometimes we cancel the appointment if someone casually shows up late, sometimes we let "late" happen if the Guidance is the person is truly struggling. Light Workers learn to walk away when the "prove your self to me while I don't make any effort" vibe arises. Other Light Workers wilt under the pressure. Guidance is invaluable. When we are led by Spirit, Light Workers can ride the tides and currents of clients.  Our Practice helps us to re-center and re-group.

Here are some examples of behaviors and reactions I have experienced.  (This is NOT to blame any one.... simply revealing the other side of being a Light Worker-- hopefully with some humor. Remember I am from NYC so I make fun of everything. )

Oh, you are a psychic? Do me !  (To which I want to reply: If I just told you I was a gynecologist, would you be asking me to look up your vagina?)
You are wrong !  (If you already know the answer, why on Earth are you consulting a psychic?)
I didn't feel any thing. (As if everyone can feel energy at the time it is delivered. If you are shut down, one energy treatment will not miraculously open one up... sometimes it does).
I'm late.  (No apology. They are 15 minutes late for a 30 minute appointment, and when they called for an appointment were in crisis. When they miss the appointment because they are late, they never come back).
You and I are exactly alike, and now we are friends. Another version: Now I am in your Inner Circle of Gifted Healers. (This is after I listened to them for 2 hours and they know absolutely nothing about me. I don't have any inner circles.)

Backing out of these situations can be perilous !  Not only is one backing out, the other person can be set off in a rage of imagined (but real to them) rejection.

Many people go into the so-called Helper Professions for unhealthy reasons:  wounded ego, low self esteem, trying to either find or create a self identity, or seeking to avoid one's own pain, fears and Spiritual growth.  People ask to join my Specialized Classes.  Participants are selected via Guidance. It takes a strong core of Spiritual Development and Strength to take on this work. And I don't know any short cut through time. No matter how Gifted one is, time devoted to one's personal Spiritual Practice cannot be a short cut.  In this age one can pay to get certified in just about anything: Life Coach, Reiki, Energy / Angelic Reader, Crystal Healer.  The list is endless and unregulated in a billion dollar industry.  An earned certificate is simply that.... it is not necessarily a skill, only a skill at getting a certificate .... just like when I was a Professor I told students getting an Education guarantees that one knows how to get through school, but is no guarantee that one learned anything about the subject matter!

Our own Practice is key to living life well.  Ultimately no one can help another-- as a dear friend has said-- "helping" someone is the softer side of control.  What we can do is show doorways, open doors, put up trail markers. Then if one chooses to follow or explore the signs, s/he will open up to resources and guidance that will allow one to make dramatic changes in one's life, behaviors, attitude, and mood. What we can do is maintain our dignity and self -respect even when assaulted by the wounded (conscious or not). What we can do is model a Spiritual Path by living it our self.

Namaste
